Tofu Space: Betty Apple – Mermaid Awakening Club

Buzzcut Zeazon collaborated with the Copenhagen-based creative studio Tofu Collective for the unveiling of the solo exhibition 'Mermaid Awakening Club' by Taiwan's queer icon, mermaid diva, and avant-garde artist Betty Apple. The exhibition commenced with an energetic celebration in partnership with GL STRAND, featuring Betty Apple's performance piece 'Mermaid Escape Room' in GL STRAND's banquet hall. Serving as an initiation ritual with electronic rhythms, party lasers, and liberating dance, the performance welcomed individuals into Betty Apple's mermaid cult. Concurrently, Betty Apple inaugurated the new non-profit gallery, Tofu Space, located at Læderstræde 15. Buzzcut Zeazon was delighted to contribute support in the preparations, execution, and guest management for this opening night. 'Mermaid Awakening Club' builds upon Betty Apple's decade-long exploration of the mermaid entity through performative and digital mediums. As an artist and professional mermaid diver, she delves into the transformative potentials of body and gender in a sci-fi future characterized by the overflow of the world's seas and technology's descent into self-indulgence. In this narrative, the cyborg mermaid emerges as the inevitable vessel of the future. Drawing connections to rave culture, queer sci-fi, and post-internet phenomena, the exhibition offers a multi-sensory experience, inviting the audience to engage with Betty Apple's mermaid avatar in a maritime future where distinctions of gender, body, race, and nationality dissolve within digital depths.
